International Symposium on "New Directions of Urban-Rural Development in China" Was Successfully Held at PolyU
“中国城乡发展新方向”国际研讨会在香港理工大学顺利召开

From June 6 to 7, 2024, the International Symposium on "New Directions of Urban-Rural Development in China" was successfully held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The symposium was jointly organized by the Department of Building and Real Estate (BRE) and the Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and co-organized by the China and Global Development Network (CGDN) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Peking University–The Hong Kong Polytechnic University China Social Work Research Centre, and the China Innovation Urban-Rural Governance Research Network (CIURG). The event received an enthusiastic response from both local and overseas participants.
2024年6月6日-7日,“中国城乡发展新方向”国际研讨会在香港理工大学顺利召开。本次研讨会由香港理工大学建筑与房地产系（BRE）、应用社会科学系（APSS）联合主办，香港理工大学中国与全球发展网络（CGDN）、北京大学——香港理工大学中国社会工作研究中心、中国创新城乡治理研究网络（CIURG）协办，本地和境外参会者反应热烈。

The symposium opened with warm welcome remarks delivered by Professor Daniel Shek, Associate Vice President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Professor Eddie C. M. Hui, Head of the Department of Building and Real Estate. Professor Shek and Professor Hui extended their warmest welcome and sincere gratitude to all guests and participants. They emphasized that the increasingly evolving political and economic environment in China and around the world has brought many new challenges to China's urban-rural development. Against this backdrop, the symposium was of great significance for exploring new dynamics and emerging trends in China's urban-rural development.
研讨会在香港理工大学副校长石丹理教授，建筑与房地产学系主任任志浩教授热情洋溢的欢迎致辞中拉开了序幕。石丹理教授和任志浩教授向与会嘉宾与参会者表示最热烈的欢迎与最诚挚的谢意，强调当前中国和世界日益演变的政治经济环境为中国城乡的发展带来了许多新挑战，举办本次研讨会对于探讨中国城乡发展的新动态和新趋势具有十分重大的意义。

During the formal sessions, Professor Weiping Wu from Columbia University, Professor Li Tian from Tsinghua University, Professor Hyun Bang SHIN from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Professor Huilin Lu from Peking University delivered impressive keynote speeches. Their presentations addressed a range of important topics, including China's urbanization in a global context, rural revitalization and the dual-track property rights system, the temporal positioning of the politics and economy of China's urbanization, and the Southern Jiangsu model of urbanization.
在正式会议环节，来自哥伦比亚大学的吴维平教授，清华大学的田莉教授，伦敦政治经济学院的Hyun Bang SHIN教授和北京大学的卢晖临教授，分别就全球背景下的中国城市化、乡村振兴与双层产权制度、中国城市化政治与经济的时间定位，城市化的苏南模式等主题发表了令人印象深刻的主旨演讲。

The symposium received strong support from partners of the China Innovation Urban-Rural Governance Research Network (CIURG). Five invited speakers from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at Nanjing University — Professor Zhendong Luo, Associate Professor Mingrui Shen, Dr. Yibo Qiao, Dr. Peipei Chen, and Dr. Jie Sun — presented their latest research findings. Their presentations covered five major themes: new forms of rural governance in the Internet era, the participation of state-owned enterprises in sustainable rural development, the spatial evolution of the digital economy, agricultural specialization and social capital, and the reverse mobility of China's younger generation.
本次研讨会获得了城乡治理创新研究网络（CIURG）合作伙伴们的大力支持。来自南京大学建筑与城市规划学院的罗震东教授，申明锐副教授，乔艺波博士，陈培培博士和孙洁博士等5位特邀发言人报告了他们的最新研究成果，涵盖互联网时代的新型乡村治理，国有企业参与乡村可持续发展，数字经济的空间演化，农业专业化与社会资本，中国年轻一代的反向流动等五大主题。

In addition, scholars including Associate Professor Junxi Qian from The University of Hong Kong, Associate Professor June Wang from City University of Hong Kong, Associate Professor Karita Kan, Associate Professor Esther Yung, Dr. Jiaxin Chen, Dr. Yuting Hou, and Dr. Ling Meng from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University delivered insightful academic presentations. Their talks explored a wide range of topics related to urban-rural development and governance, including rural revitalization, social networks, village conservation, transport planning, industrial development, and education.
此外还有来自香港大学的QIAN Junxi副教授，香港城市大学的WANG June副教授，香港理工大学的Karita KAN副教授，Esther YUNG副教授，CHEN Jiaxin博士，HOU Yuting博士和MENG Ling博士等学者做了精彩的学术报告，深入探讨了城乡发展与治理中的乡村振兴、社会网络、村落保护、交通规划、产业发展、教育等一系列主题。

On June 7, a group discussion session was held, during which participants engaged in open and in-depth interdisciplinary exchanges on China's urban-rural development. The participants agreed that, in order to address the new challenges facing China's urbanization and to ensure sustainable, inclusive, and integrated development, it is necessary to conduct extensive and rigorous research and to explore new development strategies, innovative approaches, and practical solutions. They further noted that comparing empirical studies from China with international cases can help advance existing planning and governance theories, which have largely been based on Western urban experiences. Such efforts are of great significance not only for China, but also for other regions and countries undergoing urban transformation. Participants expressed great satisfaction with the outcomes of the symposium and looked forward to future exchanges and collaborations on research related to urban-rural development.
在6月7日进行的小组交流会上，参会嘉宾自由发言，进一步就中国城乡发展进行了更加深入和详细的跨学科交流。嘉宾们一致认为要克服当前中国城市化面临的全新挑战，确保中国可持续、包容和综合的发展，有必要开展广泛而严谨的研究，探索新的发展战略、创新方法和解决方案。通过将中国的实证研究与国际案例进行比较，推动现有以西方城市经验为基础的规划与治理理论，不仅对中国，也对其他正在经历城市转型的地区和国家具有十分重要的意义。参会者对研讨会的成果表示十分满意，并期待未来关于城乡发展相关研究的交流与合作。
